Christian Annyas - Railroad Company Logo Design Evolution

“The early design all have a certain handmade quality. Most of them are simple, bold, black and white. And timeless. Some of them can still be seen on box cars and locomotives; they still remain powerful.”

I love these! They are mostly very old logos, up til Herbert Matters excellent New Haven railroad logo (top right) which is from 1954. You can see more logos and newer ones in the original post (from an always interesting blog!).

What I think is really interesting is the aesthetic and styling of these logos has a lot in common with a recent design trend that has been around for a while now. The Dieline recently profiled this trend, specifically in packaging design, calling it ‘Hipster’

Ephemera from the flickr of Alistair Hall, founder of brilliant design studio We Made This. He has a great collection of vintage graphics, I should really get into buying this sort of thing, will have a look this weekend!

I definitely blogged some of this ephemera ages a go on here, but I was reminded of them again when I saw that one of my favorite blogs The Casual Optimist is going to be posting a Q&A with Alistair soon (As well as one with the also great AceJet 170) so look out for them!

Alistair also runs a We Made This blog which is not to be missed.
