The talented gents behind Ferocious Quarterly invited a great group of creatives and myself to contribute to their third issue titled, ‘Be Prepared’. I knew that this quote from the horribly awesome Rambo saga fit the issue’s theme perfectly. Make (via Be Prepared)

Christian Annyas - Railroad Company Logo Design Evolution
“The early design all have a certain handmade quality. Most of them are simple, bold, black and white. And timeless. Some of them can still be seen on box cars and locomotives; they still remain powerful.”
I love these! They are mostly very old logos, up til Herbert Matters excellent New Haven railroad logo (top right) which is from 1954. You can see more logos and newer ones in the original post (from an always interesting blog!).
What I think is really interesting is the aesthetic and styling of these logos has a lot in common with a recent design trend that has been around for a while now. The Dieline recently profiled this trend, specifically in packaging design, calling it ‘Hipster’.

Designers Jessica Karle Heltzel, Tim Hoover and Eric R. Mortensen have joined forces to produce a series of limited-edition felt pennants that “commemorate the everyday.” With a new pennant releasing each month the series already includes solid contributions from The Heads of State, Richard Perez and Ken Barber of House Industries fame. All the pennants are hand-printed and hand-sewn in the good ole’ U.S.A by folks who’ve helped shape the tradition since the early 1900s. Check out the collection at The People’s Pennant.
